Most rare earth metals are not rare at all. They are 17 chemical elements important to the manufacture of a huge number of high-technology devices. Rare earth metals make super-strong magnets that are used in things like wind turbines and the latest batteries for electric cars. Rare earths are used in TVs and computers. They are also used in the productions of steel. Demand has grown in recent years, but China's export limits have dropped.
