This is the VOA Special English HEALTH REPORT.

This month, the Australian High Court ruled in support of a law that bars tobacco companies from putting their logos or colors on cigarette packages. The European Union is considering a similar ban. But a recent international study showed that some countries do little to control tobacco use. It found that the tobacco industry still has a strong influence on tobacco use around the world.

Study organizers examined information about three billion tobacco users worldwide. They looked closely at tobacco use in fourteen low- and middle-income countries. They compared this information with tobacco use in two developed countries – the United States and Britain.

Gary Giovino is with the University of Buffalo School of Public Health and Professions in New York State. He also was the lead researcher in the study.

GARY GIOVINO: “Tobacco contributes an enormous burden to the health care system in developed countries, and that scenario will play out in the not-too-distant future in low- and middle-income countries. It already has in many countries -- in India, for example.”

The study found that China has three hundred million tobacco users -- more than any other country. India was second, with almost two hundred seventy-five million tobacco users. Dr. Giovino says the researchers found powerful pro-tobacco forces were active even in elementary schools.

GARY GIOVINO: “The China National Tobacco Company has supported elementary schools in China – dozens and dozens of them. And they use their support to promote propaganda about tobacco use, and they are basically telling students that genius comes from hard work and tobacco helps them to be successful. That to me is mind-boggling, that a government would tell its children to use tobacco to be successful when tobacco will addict them and shorten their lives.”

The study showed that governments and social traditions in many countries are open to influence from pro-tobacco forces. So the Australian court decision is considered important in supporting those fighting to control tobacco use. Jonathan Lieberman directs the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer in Australia.

JONATHAN LIEBERMAN: “It shows to everybody that the only way to deal with the tobacco industry’s claims, sabre rattling, legal threats, is to stare them down in court. It’s a fantastic decision for public health in Australia and globally.”

The study found that, unless urgent action is taken, about a billion people will die early in this century as a result of tobacco use. On average, each of them will lose fifteen years of life.

And that’s the VOA Special English HEALTH REPORT. You can find a link to the tobacco study – and a video of Dr. Giovino explaining it – on our website, voaspecialenglish.com. I’m Steve Ember.

It is so rediculous to use tobacco, since it waste money and cause desease, and harmful for exhaling smoke people, shorten your life. We need to make fuss on another addictive one, it is alcohol, the devastation of it cant be estimated, shoud the scenario of tobacco coud be the same with alcohol? shoud alcohol be banned or ristricted. it is not kind of propaganda to tell that. I have been seeing my friends and many generations of familys is damaged by addicting alcohol. alcohol is an massive invisible enemy of human too.

GARY GIOVINO must apologize for his irresponsible statement.

I live in the south of Brazil, and there are too many peolple that are adict in tobacco that you cannot believe. The government do not make big efforts to decrease the numbers of tobacco users, and we know it costs a lot for us, because a lot of people suffer of lung problem and need to use healthy system and the companies do not stop to produce this poisonous thing. It kills, but why do people insist in the use?

In EVERY part of the world where tobacco is used there is not "true awareness" of the damage that it can cause.
Unfortunately in EVERY part of the world there are smoker child!
Changing the color of the package is not the just way to fight the problem ...
Many resources are taken at the agriculture (that can be used to feed million people) all of that to reduce the family budget, augmenting health problems like ASTHMA and IMPOTENCE for example and at the end the death.

We have to try to have a collaboration from the tobacco companies and from everyone that have an economic interest (concerning tobacco) in a way to ensure their revenue also changing their crop their job their trade. This will probably cause other problem like black market but the phenomenon will certainly be less than the current that sees millions of people active smokers, passive smokers, passive smokers indirect (see third hand smoke).

The fact of creating dependency in an individual in order to profit from it should be illegal in every country. In this way, each smoker could be compensated!!!!

It is mind-boggling Gary Giovino is with the University of Buffalo School of Public Health and Professions in New York State. He is just not responsible and his conclusions about China is completely bull. Anyway, VOA has a reponsibility to report the facts, instead of distorting the facts.

I'm a common Chinese student and no teacher ever told me that tobacco would help me to be successful. On the contrary, tobacco is forbidden in primary school ,junior and senior middle school in china. VOA should be responsable for what it says.

It's so crazy to hear that too. I was very surprise that teacher can tell to their student is good. That would be never happen. This's ridiculous.
In my personal idea, tobacco is a kind of so bad thing. I never want to be a tobacco users.

My father has given up smoking for three months. I'm very happy for that. I don't like smoke of tobacco because it make me can't breathe. I hope every body can give up smoking like my father.

I don't agree with the statement from GARY GIOVINO about China tabaco policy part about elemantary school. His research is not done based on truth, but his imagination.
