A new study says Asians are now the largest group of new immigrants arriving in the United States each year. It also says recent Asian arrivals are "almost surely" the most highly educated group of immigrants in United States history. The Pew Research Center released the report on Tuesday.

STEVE EMBER: The report is called "The Rise of Asian Americans."  Researchers found that Asians living in the United States are more likely than the general public to be satisfied with their lives and finances. They are also more likely to believe that the country is moving in the right direction.

Pew researcher Cary Funk says there are many reasons why Asians move to the United States, not just for employment and education.

CARY FUNK: "One of the most common reasons for immigration is for family reunification but it's usually a mix of employment, education and family reasons."

The report calls Asian Americans the "highest-income, best-educated and fastest growing racial group in the United States." Asian Americans increased from less than one percent of the population in nineteen sixty-five to five point eight percent today, says Cary Funk.

CARY FUNK: "Part of that rise has to do with the change in our immigration policies in nineteen sixty-five.  That opened the immigration stream from all parts of the world.  Seventy-four percent of Asian American adults are foreign born.  Japanese Americans are majority U.S. born. "

Immigrants are coming to the United States from many countries across Asia and the subcontinent. About four hundred thirty thousand Asians arrived in the U.S. in twenty-ten. They represented thirty-six percent of all new immigrants that year. That compared with about thirty-one percent from Spanish speaking countries.

The Pew researchers point out that Asian immigration to the United States has increased only slightly in recent years.  However, Asians have become the new face of U.S. immigration because of a sharp decrease in immigrants from Central and South America.

The Pew report says fifteen percent of Asian immigrants are here illegally, lower than the rate among Hispanic immigrants. The researchers based their report on interviews with more than three thousand Asian Americans. They found that Asians in the United States place more value on marriage, parenthood, hard work and career success than other Americans. I’m Steve Ember.

I was wondering why there are fewer immigrants from Central and South American? Economic or political problems?

My opinion is immigration numbers are decreasing in U.S., but the asians coming to U.S. are the same numbers as before, Maybe that explains these numbers.

I'm astonished at American's observational and evaluational readiness. Asians are said to anchor in America primarly because of the love of money and secondly what America seems to them: 'a land of abundant oppertunity'. Asians are best -educated, highest income and fastest growing and what I say 'the family re-unification crazy' lot. I value America's opinion with her true intention and spirit. Thank you.

It costs a lot living in the United Stated. I remembered when my husband and I moved here, we spent a great deal of money. It was hard to save especially because of the high rent. We could cook by ourselves and shop during sales, but have no alternative in housing. People always say as long as you make great efforts, you get opportunities to succeed. Now I don't think it's absolutely true particularly after having seen so many weakness of Capitalism. Thanks, VOA.

It's interesting that Asian immigrants feel more satisfied with their lives and finances than general public. I don't know if Asian Americans are highest-income, best-educated and fastest growin racial group. I have heard even now there remain some racial discriminations in American society. But, if they place more value on marrage, parenthood and hard-work, it means Asian Americans are more conservative and patient than others. Conservativeness and patience are the keys to success ?

The number of Spanish speaking immigrants, probably from Central and South America, is getting sharply smaller. I hope they are successfully being educated and employed in their home countries. Illeagal immigration is not permitted.

Asian immigrants are getting slightly increasing in number. I suppose among Asians there would be difference between their home countries. As for students going to the U.S., it's reported that despite Chinese are sharply, Korean,Taiwanese and Indians are slightly increasing, Japanese are moderately decreasing. Generally speaking, Japanese students are getting less prefer to go abroad. One reason is said that they can't afford going abroad in these recession. The other cause would be they become more introversive and hate to take a risk.

Indians are really the reason the stats are through the roof - Indians are so far ahead of the next group its not even funny - thats why the mainstream never report it - the spelling bee is just a drop in the bucket of the other huge successes that Indian work hard at getting. Indians = highest IQ as well ....all in this Forbes article
