Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said "significant differences" remain between Democratic and Republican less than a day before sharp tax increases and spending cuts would take effect. But Reid's Republican counterpart, Senator Mitch McConnell, said he was concerned about a "lack of urgency" in the last-minute negotiations.
