After Lives as Experiment Subjects, Retirement with Dignity
The National Institutes of Health officially ended all of its chimpanzee research last year. The decision came fast on the heels of a 2013 report concluding that medical technology had moved beyond the need to use chimps as test subjects. It was welcome news for animal rights activists.
